So let me just start this post by saying shit sort of caught up to me all at once!
I literally spent all day in the kitchen on Thursday (Thanksgiving). I didn’t mind it at all. There’s something about cooking while listening to a really good Spotify playlist that actually feels relaxing to me.
The only difficult part was timing when food should go in the oven and which dishes can cook together at the same temperatures so that at the end of the process, you have a complete, hot meal.
Friday was spent recovering and binge-watching Netflix while snacking on leftovers. Saturday, I had appointments and made chili for the annual “Bedlam” game here in Oklahoma. That’s when Oklahoma University and Oklahama State University play football and my Facebook feed is full of “Boomer Sooner” and “Pistols Firing” while I’m over here wearing my Texas A&M shirt and relaxing because my team has sucked badly for a while and I don’t have the stress of hoping they make it to a championship.
Sorry, Aggies. I’ll always love you, but I’m nothing if not honest. Gig ’em!
By Sunday, I realized there were about six loads of laundry needing to be washed and The Husband Dude went grocery shopping so we had to play our bi-weekly game of Tetris where we try to rearrange everything in the refrigerator and pitifully small pantry cabinet so that everything fits. On top of that, I had to pack for a business trip this week, which means playing Tetris again with packing a suitcase.
That makes me sound way more important than I am.
I’m actually going to Oklahoma City for training to get certified in Water Remediation. I’ve had some of this training before as an insurance adjuster, but now I’m going to go through the “official” training and certification process. I know y’all are all going to be jealous when I can tell you what size dehumidifier you need for a 500 square foot room that has been soaked by a rusty water heater.
So all of this is to say that I did not do any writing this weekend, which means the posts this week will be meager. I’m beginning to see a pattern here and I’m not liking it, but damnit…life is busy!
Anyway, I think I started a new tradition for Thanksgiving. Back in the day, my tradition was always to watch A&M play U.T. on Thanksgiving Day, but then A&M moved to the SEC and now life is just wrong. I mean, our fight song even talks about “sawing varsity’s horns off” and now we don’t even ever play them. WHAT. THE. FUCK?
Anyway…there were no Thanksgiving Day games that either The Husband Dude or I wanted to watch, so we watched movies instead. I told him that since it’s supposed to be a day of football, we need to watch football movies, so I pulled out my favorite: Friday Night Lights.
That movie and book have a special place in my heart because it takes place in Odessa, Texas which is a hop, skip and jump from El Paso, where I grew up. (Don’t kid yourself. Texas is huge. They’re both considered West Texas and yet they’re still about a four hour drive apart.) The true-story events of occurred with the Odessa-Permian High School Class of 1989, which is when I was also a high school senior.
Maybe that’s why I relate. It’s West Texas in the late 80’s and football was (and is) King.
Plus, who can go wrong with Billy Bob Thornton? And the kid from Sling Blade all grown up, but before he got his teeth fixed with Gary Busey Chiclets gum caps and went on NCIS New Orleans? And Tim McGraw all paunchy and hairy and drunk, acting like an asshole Dad trying to relive his glory days?
I mean…what’s not to love?
So I think that’s going to be my new Thanksgiving tradition.
Anyway…
I hope everyone who celebrates Thanksgiving had a good one, and if you didn’t, I’m glad it’s over for you now. It’s time to start focusing on all the winter holidays. Did you know that this year Hanukkah will fall over the same week as Christmas?
As such, I thought it would be proper to kick off the holidays on my blog with one of my favorites: The Hanukkah Song! Enjoy!
Stay weird, my friends. Normal is boring!

December 3, 2019 at 7:13 amIt’s a crazy time of year, never enough time to do all that needs to be done. Which is why we gave it all up a few years ago and travel now instead. The house doesn’t look as festive but we have more fun!
As for football, meh. I know it’s basically a religion down your way, but I can take it or leave it. That.. and I hate Tom Brady which doesn’t make me popular in these parts.

December 6, 2019 at 9:32 amI don’t worship at the altar of football like others here do, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy a good college nailbiter!

December 6, 2019 at 6:48 amI was in the kitchen a ton leading up to Thanksgiving and I was not even hosting. Day after Thanksgiving I had to drive to Louisville for Irish dancing midwest championships. In a word: exhausting! My dancer started puking Thurs night but bounced back and danced great. For this reason- I am always glad Thanksgiving is over. Love this song and the turkey one! Enjoy your training. Sounds riveting.
